How is instruction organized –
Students are assessed to determine level of proficiency. Lessons are then customized to each student’s needs and goals. Daily assessment will measure progress and determine areas of weakness/strength. In addition to individual instruction, students will be placed in appropriate ensembles commensurate with their abilities.
These daily lessons will address topics such as instrumental technique (tone, articulation, intonation, expression, etc.), practice habits, and other related topics. Ensembles will meet daily and all students will perform in a concert at the end of the festival. There are also opportunities for solo and chamber- music performances.
Theory and Improvisation:
(for advanced students): Students will be taught music theory and how it applies to improvisation and composition. This daily class provides students with a basic understanding of chord/scale relationships and improved aural skills.
These will be lectures/demonstrations by guest artists on various aspects of performing, improvisation, composition, songwriting, and personal experience. There will be a wide variety of topics, and at times there may be group participation. Q/A and group discussion will encompass part of the class, providing students with an opportunity to explore the artists' opinions and strategies for success.
Each day faculty will give special presentations that provide support for the scheduled daily classes. These special lectures usually involving faculty in joint teaching roles, focus on real-world experiences and music industry challenges.
These daily "after hour" jam sessions are informal playing and singing experiences.
